Saturday September 21 I photographed the “Party on the Commons” put on by the San Diego River Park Foundation. It took place at the new Grant park located just east of the Camino Del Rio and Qualcomm Way intersection in Mission Valley.
The San Diego River Park foundation is an organization responsible for the stewardship of the San Diego River. It is dedicated to conserving the water, wildlife, recreation, culture and community involved with the river.
2024 marks the 23rd year of the foundation. This anniversary celebration included live music by the Garners Trio, beverages, catered appetizers, a silent auction, wildlife presentations with live animals, and awards. Each year the river foundation recognizes a new volunteer of the year while also continuing to recognize past recipients. From a relative outsider perspective the organization feels like a tight-knit group that is growing quickly. While complimenting the staff President Rob Hutsel jokingly asked if they had hired anyone in the last hour. It was a fun event with a touch of sophistication including speeches by elected officials, but remained well grounded with a relaxed outdoorsy vibe. It was reassuring to speak to a board member that said he fished the river as a kid.
